As a new parent, there are several things to learn and adjust to when it comes to taking care of your baby. One of the most important things to perfect is how to change a diaper, and specifically, how to hold your baby’s legs during the process.
Why Is Holding Baby’s Legs Correctly Important?
When you are changing your baby’s diaper, it is important to hold their legs properly to avoid any discomfort or harm. Incorrect positioning can lead to hip dysplasia or discomfort in the long run. Hence, it is essential to learn the correct way to hold your baby’s legs before you start changing a diaper.
How to Hold Baby’s Legs Correctly?
The leg-holding technique differs depending on the age of the baby; thus, we have divided it into two categories.
Positioning for babies younger than six months :
- Criss-cross hold : With one hand, hold both of your baby’s ankles and lift them gently. Then bend their knees towards their chest in a criss-cross position. Hold them securely in that position while you remove the dirty diaper and clean the area.
- Ankle grab hold : With one hand, hold your baby’s ankles and lift them gently. Keep your baby’s legs open using the other hand while you remove the dirty diaper and clean the area.
Positioning for babies older than six months :
- Foot hold : Hold your baby’s foot by the ankle with one hand and lift their leg to a comfortable height. Keep your baby’s leg held high while you remove the dirty diaper and clean them. Swap legs as necessary for a thorough clean-up.
- Leg lift hold : Slide your hand under your baby’s bottom and lift their legs upward towards the ceiling. Hold them securely in that position while you remove the dirty diaper and clean the area.
Benefits of Holding Legs Correctly
The proper positioning of your baby’s legs during a diaper change has a few benefits for your little one. One of the main advantages is that it can prevent hip dysplasia that can occur in babies during the first few months of life. Proper positioning also ensures that your baby feels comfortable and relaxed during diaper changes.
As a parent, it’s essential to keep your baby safe, happy, and comfortable. Holding your baby’s legs correctly when changing a diaper is one of the ways to achieve this. By following the techniques mentioned above, you can ensure that your baby feels secure, and you can protect them from health risks such as hip dysplasia.
