How To Shift Motorcycle Gears
The process of shifting motorcycle gears may seem daunting at first, but once you have the basics, it can be an effortless process. Learning how to shift gears with smooth, efficient motion will ensure that you can maximize the performance of your motorcycle. Here are a few simple steps to follow.
1. Preparing the Motorcycle
- Apply the brakes and shift the motorcycle into neutral before changing gears.
- Engage the clutch lever located at the left side of the handlebar.
- Press the shifter located at the left side of the footpeg.
2. Select the Correct Gear
- To shift up one gear, press down on the shifter.
- To shift down one gear, press up on the shifter.
- Be sure not to make abrupt motions with the shifter, as it can cause damage to the motorcycle.
3. Engage the Gear
- After selecting the desired gear, slowly let out the clutch lever until you feel the bike’s engine catches.
- Once the engine catches, gradually increase the throttle and the motorcycle will start to accelerate.
- Make sure to keep the clutch lever pulled in until the bike is moving smoothly.
4. Repeat the Process for other Gears
- Repeat the same process for all further gears.
- Make sure to be mindful of the gear that you are shifting into, and the speed of the engine.
- Be aware of the RPM limit of your bike.
5. Shift Into Neutral
- To shift the motorcycle into neutral, make sure the bike is at a stop and the clutch lever is engaged.
- Press the shifter down one more click from first gear.
- Make sure to check the dashboard to confirm that the gear indicator is on “N” – indicating neutral.
