How To Shift Motorcycle Gears

The process of shifting motorcycle gears may seem daunting at first, but once you have the basics, it can be an effortless process. Learning how to shift gears with smooth, efficient motion will ensure that you can maximize the performance of your motorcycle. Here are a few simple steps to follow.

1. Preparing the Motorcycle

  • Apply the brakes and shift the motorcycle into neutral before changing gears.
  • Engage the clutch lever located at the left side of the handlebar.
  • Press the shifter located at the left side of the footpeg.

2. Select the Correct Gear

  • To shift up one gear, press down on the shifter.
  • To shift down one gear, press up on the shifter.
  • Be sure not to make abrupt motions with the shifter, as it can cause damage to the motorcycle.

3. Engage the Gear
