Flat Road Bike Gear
Everyone who loves cycling is familiar with what are called flat roads. These roads are usually short, straight, and level stretches which require little effort. But, despite the easy ride, it doesn’t mean there isn’t gear to be used in order to make the most of the ride.
When choosing the right pedals, there are four options: platform, clipless, toe clip, and quill pedals. Platform pedals are perfect for flat roads as they are large and wide, giving your feet plenty of room to move around and keep you well balanced.
Tires & Tubes
Proper tire pressure is essential for flat road rides for multiple reasons. First, it makes sure that your bike is rolling more efficiently, as the air pressure inside the tire gives it the stiffness and shape to effectively turn the wheel when pedaled. Additionally, having the correct pressure will ensure that the contact patch between the tire and ground is correct for the best grip.
Gear selection for flat road riding is the same as any other type of cycling. However, it is important to maintain a good combination of gear selection and cadence (pedaling speed) in order to get the most out of a flat road ride. The most basic of ratios is the one-to-one ratio, meaning one turn of the pedal will produce one full turn of the wheel.
Other Gear Considerations
In addition to the items mentioned above, there are several other pieces of gear to consider for flat roads:
- Clothing – Shoes, shorts, and other clothing with aero fit designs that reduce aerodynamic drag.
- Lights – It’s important to always be visible when riding in order to stay safe.
- Helmet – A helmet is an essential piece of safety gear and is required by law in many areas.
- Mirrors – Mirrors allow you to check your blind spots and ensure that you know your surroundings.
Flat road riding can be an enjoyable and efficient way to get around town or enjoy a pleasant cycling ride. With the right gear, it can be an even more pleasant and enjoyable experience. Hopefully this article has helped you on your cycling journey.
