What do Newborns Wear in the Summer?
As a new parent, making sure your baby is well-dressed for the summertime can be a daunting task. Whether it’s your first or your fourth, there are a few basics for what most newborns should be wearing during the warmer months.
Types of Attire
For hot days, it’s all about keeping your little one as cool and comfortable as possible. Here are the types of clothing your newborn will need this summer:
- Onesies or short-sleeved shirts
- Shorts or pants
- Sun hats
- Optional: Lightweight sleeping bags, footies, and diaper covers
Fabrics and Colors
The key to clothing newborns in the summertime is lightweight fabric. Look for clothes made of soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton, bamboo, or linen, which will ensure that your baby stays cool and comfortable. You can also opt for lighter colors, like white or pastels, to help reflect the sun.
Do keep in mind, though, that dark colors absorb the heat, so you may want to avoid too many black or navy outfits. Instead, opt for bright colors to brighten up your baby’s wardrobe.
Layering is also important in summertime. Since the temperature of the day can fluctuate, it’s a good idea to dress your little one in multiple layers, such as short-sleeve shirts and onsies, so you can easily add or remove layers as needed. If you plan on taking them outdoors, a lightweight and breathable sleeping bag or blanket can help keep your baby warm in cooler air-conditioned places.
When it comes to embracing the summer sun, it’s best to go slow. In general, newborns should avoid being in direct sunlight for longer than 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Make sure to apply sunscreen before they go outside, and have them wear a lightweight hat and long-sleeve shirt for further protection.
Now that you know what your newborn should wear this summer, you can feel confident that your little one will stay cool, comfy, and safe as you enjoy all the sunny days ahead of you.
