What Really Grinds My Gears

None of us are immune from things that seemingly drive us nuts, no matter how Zen we try to be. While most people get annoyed by simple things like slow computers, dead cell phone batteries, and non-functioning toasters, there are much deeper annoyances that can definitely ruin your day.

Here’s What Really Grinds My Gears:

1. Lack of Respect from Others
Nothing drives me up a wall more than when someone shows a lack of respect for others. Whether it’s talking over someone, not listening to them, or treating them as if they should just be grateful to be around them. Respect is something that should be earned, not assumed.

2. People Who Don’t Take Responsibility for Their Actions
It drives me mad when people evade responsibility when their actions have an effect on others. People should take responsibility for what they do, and then use the opportunity to learn and grow from that experience.

3. Untrustworthiness
When someone tells you they are going to do something, really listen to all that they say. That means they should follow through, even if it’s something silly like stopping at the grocery store on the way home. If someone continually breaks their word, it will eventually chip away at their relationships and trust.

4. Social & Environmental Irresponsibility
Seeing people being wasteful of both resources and time really sets me off. From throwing trash on the ground, to eating up resources, and not taking into account how our actions can have an effect on the environment and those around us.

What Can I Do About It?

  • —Be mindful of how your actions can affect others.
  • —Always be respectful of the people around you.
  • —Take responsibility for your words and actions.
  • —Be conscious of the environment.

At the end of the day, I can only control myself and my actions. But if I can make the effort to be mindful of my surroundings, I can contribute to a better world for everyone.
