Feeling Baby Movement During Pregnancy
Feeling your baby move is an exciting milestone in pregnancy. It’s called quickening, and it’s the first indication that your baby is alive and growing. This occurs around week 16, but you may not feel the movement until week 20 or even a bit later.
When Can You Expect To Feel the Baby Move?
The timing of quickening can vary for many different reasons. Here are some factors that can affect when you can expect to feel your baby move:
- The mother’s size – Larger mothers may not be able to feel baby movement as early as smaller mothers. Larger mothers may not feel the movement until around week 20.
- The baby’s size – Smaller babies are harder to feel.
- The mother’s activity level – Moms who are more active may notice the baby move earlier than moms who are more sedentary.
While the baby’s movements should become more frequent as he or she gets bigger, some women may not feel movements until week 25 or even later. If you have any concerns or questions about movement, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider.
What Does Baby Movement Feel Like?
Baby movement during pregnancy can feel like a flutter, a kicking, popping, or rolling sensation. You may even experience a combination of these feelings. It can be similar to the sensation of having gas or having a muscle twitch. Many women describe it as being like having butterflies in their tummy.
When Should You be Concerned?
If you notice that the baby’s movements have changed, become less frequent, or stop entirely, you should contact your doctor or midwife right away. This could be a sign of a problem, such as a decrease in the amount of amniotic fluid or placental problems.
Feeling your baby move is a special moment in pregnancy and is a reminder that your little one is growing and developing inside of you.
