When to Make the Switch to Two Naps for Your Baby
As your baby grows, their sleep needs will evolve. One of the most common changes is the transition from three naps to two naps. Making the switch can be tricky, so it’s important to know when to make the switch and how to do it.
How to Know When to Make the Switch
Most babies are ready to make the switch to two naps between the ages of 12 and 18 months. Signs that your baby is ready to make the switch include:
- Your baby is sleeping for longer stretches at night.
- Your baby is taking longer to fall asleep for naps.
- Your baby is resisting taking a third nap.
- Your baby is taking two long naps.
How to Make the Switch
Once you’ve determined that your baby is ready to make the switch to two naps, there are some steps you can take to make the transition as smooth as possible.
- Start by moving nap times earlier. Begin by moving the morning nap a bit earlier and the afternoon nap a bit later. This will help your baby adjust to the new schedule.
- Gradually reduce the third nap. Once your baby is adjusted to the new nap times, start reducing the third nap until it’s eliminated. You can do this by shortening the third nap, or by skipping it altogether.
- Make sure your baby is getting enough sleep. It’s important to make sure your baby is getting enough sleep. If your baby is having trouble adjusting to the new schedule, you may need to adjust the nap times or add in a short nap in the late afternoon.
Making the switch to two naps can be a tricky transition, but with a bit of patience and some trial and error, you can make the transition easier for your baby. If you’re ever unsure, talk to your pediatrician for advice.
